About Govind Ballabh Pant
Born on the 10th of September in the year 1887, Govind Ballabh Pant was an eminent freedom fighter during India’s freedom struggle against the British, who played a key role in the nationalistic movements, along with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. He was one of the significant political leaders from the state of Uttarakhand, who had a key role in making Hindi the official language of the nation.
The government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1957, and as on today, there are a number of foundations, educational institutions and hospitals which have been named after him, as a tribute to his contributions towards public welfare.
He was a significant entity during all the freedom movements of the nation, be it the Salt March or the Satyagraha, during which he was even arrested for a couple of weeks. He made a record for himself by being the first chief minister for the state of Uttar Pradesh ever since India attained independence.
He also served as the home minister of India, for a period of seven years, from 1955 to 1961.
He passed away on the 7th of March in 1961, as a result of a cerebral stroke.
