About Nelson Mandela
Born on the 18th of July in the year 1918, Nelson Rohlilahla Mandela, commonly known as Nelson Mandela was a renowned philanthropist, politician, who hailed from the country of South Africa, and made an impact in the society by being an anti-apartheid revolutionary, contributing immensely towards the end of racial discrimination.
The first black chief executive of his country, he served as the president of the African National Congress, from the year 1991 until 1997.
Throughout his life, he voiced against inequality, poverty and any other form of racial discrimination that created a divide in society.He strived for racial reconciliation and preached about the same during his span as an African nationalist.
For his strong participation in the campaigns and protests against the apartheid government in the year 1962, he was arrested and convicted and imprisoned for a period of 27 years.
He got a release in the year 1990, and during 1994, he joined hands Nationalist President F.W. de Klerk, to put an end to the concept of apartheid. He led the African National Congress to win the elections, and thus went on to become South India’s first black president.
He was a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1993, and for his contributions to abolish racial discrimination and other social evils, the Indian government honored him with the Bharat Ratna Award in 1990.
He passed away on the 5th of December, 2013.
