About Dhondo Keshav Karve
Born on the 18th of April, in the year 1858, Dhondo Keshav Karve, popularly known by the name Maharishi Karve, was a prominent figure in Indian history known for his immense contribution towards the field of women’s welfare and also for being an ardent social reformer.
He won the Bharat Ratna Award from the government of India in the year 1958, when he also celebrated his 100th birthday. Apart from his contributions to women’s welfare, he also registered himself as a prominent personality in the field of education and went on to teach mathematics for a period of 23 years at the Fergusson College in Pune, from 1891 to 1914.
He worked tremendously for women, especially widows to uplift their status in society. He set up shelter homes for them, arranging for food and education, and despite all the criticisms and insults that came his way from orthodox sections of the society for his deeds for the widows, he paid no heed to them and went on to pursue his passion of helping the needful.
During his lifespan, he established a number of schools for girls as well as widows, to help them get educated and live a better life.
He was also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan Award from the government of India in the year 1955. He passed away on the 9th of November in the year 1962.
