About M.S. Subbulakshmi
Born on the 16th of September in the year 1916, M.S. Subbulakshmi was a renowned classical and Carnatic singer, who made a record for herself in numerous ways, one of which was by becoming the first Indian musician to win the famous Ramon Magsaysay Award, which is often regarded as the Nobel Prize of Asia.
She also made history by winning the Bharat Ratna Award and was the first musician ever to be honored with this award.
Born and brought up in Madurai, she was enthusiastic from a very tender age and began her training both in carnatic music as well as Hindustani music under the guidance of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and Pandit Narayanrao Vyas, respectively.
Her list of achievements began from a very early age, when just at the age of 10, she released her first recording album and went on to perform at the Madras Music Academy at the mere age of 13 years.
Her performances garnered a lot of appreciation from the public and also eminent personalities of the country who were spellbound by the talent that such a little girl possessed, and by the age, she was 17 years old, she was already having concerts which were again received with a lot of accolades.
The Indian government honored her with the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1998, and she passed away on the 11th of December, in 2004.
