About Bhimsen Joshi
Born on the 4th of February in the year 1922, Bhimsen Joshi was a renowned classical musician who excelled in Hindustani music and throughout his life sang a number of famous devotional songs.
He was also popular for a specific form of singing, known as the “khayal.”
The Indian National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama acknowledged him with the Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship, which is the highest honour given to any musician, in the year 1998.
Raised in Karnataka, he developed a keen interest in music and the beauty of the musical instruments from a very young age and started practising the tanpura as well as the harmonium, mastering the instruments in no time.
He would spend nights participating in processions, where he would play his instruments and began his formal training in music from the age of 11, under the guidance of Sawai Gandharva.
His first official performance happened when he was just 19 years old and his debut album had him singing a number of devotional songs in both Hindi as well as Marathi.
Since then there was no looking back, and he would often work as a radio artist, who excelled in patriotic music, devotional music as well as playback singing.
The government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 2008. He passed away in 2011.
