About Abul Kalam Azad
Born on the 11th of November, in the year 1888, Abul Kalam Azad was a famous senior political leader in the independence movement of India, and also a renowned scholar, who made a record for himself by becoming the first minister of education in independent India.
The general public refers to him by the name of “Maulana Azad” – with Maulana meaning “a learned man” and Azad was of course his last name. His eminent contribution to the society, most notably the education foundation in India, is recalled in the nation as National Education Day on his birthday, i.e. the 11th of November.
Apart from politics and education, he was also a journalist who had penned down a number of literary works, relating to religion as well as philosophy. He was also a master in Urdu language and would often write poems in that language.
He was an active participant during India’s freedom movements, be it the non-cooperation movement or the civil disobedience movement and during the year 1923, at a young age of 35, he made a record by being the youngest person to ever be selected as the president of the Indian National Congress.
During his span as the Congress President, the famous Quit India movement was launched and he was imprisoned for a period of three years along with many other Congress leaders.
He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1992, posthumously, after he died in the year 1958.
