Historically, the name of the place Bhimtal got coined after prominent personality Bhima, from the great Indian epic: Mahabharata. It is believed that Bhima had himself visited the place when he was sent to exile along with the other Pandavas, and that is when he had the Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple, situated here on the banks of the popular Bhimtal Lake. This temple is devoted t popular Hindu deity, Lord Shiva.

Coming to the climate of the area, being a hilly area, Bhimtal remains quite pleasant during the summer season, whereas during the winter, it becomes exceptionally cold.
