Historically, the Gulmarg town was formally known by the name of Gaurimarg—a name given to the town by its local shepherds after popular Hindu deity: Goddess Parvati.
It was later named Gulmarg in the 16th century by the ruler of the Chak Dynasty—Sultan Yusuf Shah. As of today, Gulmarg houses the largest gold course of the whole wide world that stands at a height of 2,650 meters.
The scenic beauty of Gulmarg is impeccable and the soil found here primarily consists of glacial deposits such as limestones, sandstones, and a plethora of other kinds of rocks. The place has meadows that get fully enveloped in snow during the winter season and thus accentuates the growth of wildflowers like touch-me-not, buttercups as well as daisies in the region.

The place’s highest peak is the Apharwat Peak that stands at a height of 4,267 meters, and it happens to be the popular skiing destination wherein alongside skiing, a variety of other adventure sports are conducted. The area is surrounded by serene lakes and forests.
Gulmarg is often regarded as the “heartland of winter sports in India” and the place has been honored with the 7th position on Asia’s Best Skiing Destinations. Other than skiing, the other sports that are well conducted here are snowboarding, tobogganing, as well as hell-skiing.
