In the pages of both architecture and history, the Itmad-ud-Daulah Fort has acquired a special place, significantly due to the fact that it is the first tomb in India, which was constructed entirely with marble.

The fort is associated with many legends and is actually in memory of Ghiyaz Beg, later given the name Itmad-ud-Daulah, who was a minister in Emperor Shah Jahan’s court. A poor merchant, Beg was willing to give up her new born daughter since he didn’t have adequate money to bring her up. However, the baby girl brought him a lot of good luck and fortune, making him land in the Mughal court, where he was assigned a place in the palace as one of the ministers.

Later, Jahangir fell in love with the then widowed daughter of Beg, Noor Jehan and married her. She was also his most favorite wife, who had a pivotal role to play in the tenure of Mughal dynasty in terms of her rule.

The Islamic architecture is entire white in color, surrounded by small gardens. It also marked the exclusion of red sandstone as basic material from other Mughal creations. Tourists can visit the site any time of the year.
