The President House in India, commonly and popularly known as the Rashtrapti Bhavan, is situated in Delhi and is the official address of the President of India. Decked with halls, bedrooms and guest rooms, the mansion is spread over a sprawling 320 acres and boasts of magnificent presidential gardens, places of residences of staff, bodyguards, stables and big open spaces.
Initially known as the Viceroy’s House, the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s construction began in the year 1911 and 4000 acres of land was acquired under the Land & Acquisition Act, to begin the construction which led to the relocation of 300 families, previously residing in the area.
The mansion was spread over a floor area of 2,00,000 square feet, having four floors and 340 rooms, and around 700 million bricks were used for the construction along with 3 million cubic feet unit of stones.
The presidential gardens are of Mughal designs and architecture, while the dome at the center of the mansion reflects a combination of both Indian and British style. Built in the era when the British had full-fledged power over the country, the place has varied depiction of British art, mixed with Indian design and architecture.
