History of Nahargarh Fort

Rajasthan being a state known for its royal heritage, the Nahargarh Fort was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the year 1734 on the Aravalli Hills in Jaipur. Connected with the Jaigarh Fort, this fort was built as a retreat place and legends say that the spirit of a Rathore prince haunted the fort until a temple was constructed inside the fort with his name that finally led to the spirit’s peace.

Created with Indo-European architecture, the fort has a variety of structures built inside it, including the Madhavendra Bhavan, which used to be a two storey structure, built with grand suites for the king and his 12 queens. The suites were decked with bedrooms, washrooms, kitchen and a big lobby.

The fort also has a big hall, called the Diwan-i-Aam, where common men would turn up to discuss their problems and situations with the king.

In history, the Nahargarh Fort never faced any attacks by enemies, but witnessed significant events, like the treaties of the Marathas in the 18^th century, when they attacked Jaipur, and also the 1857 sepoy mutiny, during which, the fort gave shelter to a large number of Europeans.

The Nahargarh Fort is surrounded by a number of other famous tourist locations like the Amer Fort, Jaigarh Fort and the Hawa Mahal.
