History of Santiniketan
Situated close to Bolpur, in the Birbhum district of the state of West Bengal, Santiniketan was established by renowned poet, writer and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. His effort, vision and contribution led to the formation of this place, which is now a widely popular university, called the Visva-Bharati University, housing students and visitors from all over the country.
Tagore invested all the money he received after winning the Nobel l prize for literature into the establishment of Santiniketan in 1913, and ever since then his venture has expanded exponentially, transforming and budding into a popular university for education, that it is today. Popular personalities like Amartya Sen, Satyajit Ray have been students of this university.
The place attracts tourists from all over the world not just because it’s a venture by Tagore to reform the educational world, but also because this is the place where he wrote many of his award winning classics. His house situated here is also of great historic significance. The ambiance is calm and serene and makes one’s mind wander at the deepest of the places to embrace peace and understanding.
Many social and cultural events happen here throughout the year, some of which are Nandan Mela, Poush Mela and the Rabindra Jayanti, which attracts many tourists from the world to join hands in the celebrations.
