What Mega888 Is
Mega888 offers slot games with themes such as animals, myths and pop music, along with fish shooting games, where players fire at moving targets for points, and simple card and table games. Unlike most apps, it is not found on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. What the Law in Malaysia Says
Malaysia allows only a small number of licensed gambling businesses, such as the casino at Genting Highlands and licensed number forecast operators. Online casino apps like Mega888 have no such licence. Using them is an offence under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
The Act has two levels of charge that matter here. Section 7(2), for gambling in a public place, carries a fine of up to RM5,000, jail of up to six months, or both. Section 4B(a), which applies to using a phone as a gambling machine, carries a minimum fine of RM10,000 for each machine and jail of up to five years.
What Recent Cases Show
Courts in Sarawak have used this law against ordinary users in 2026:
- In September 2026 a 36 year old man in Kuching was fined RM2,500 after police found the Mega888 website on his phone at a cafe, along with a slip of paper holding a gambling ID and password. He faced two months in jail if he did not pay.
- Later that month a 54 year old man was fined RM2,000 by the same court for online gambling.
- In February 2026 police in Mukah arrested people after finding the Mega888 app on their phones.
- Also in February 2026, police arrested 388 people in an operation named Op Angsa against a large online gambling syndicate.
A former Sarawak police commissioner has said the 1953 law is out of date for online gambling and should be reformed. Until it is, police and courts continue to apply it.
How Mega888 Free Credit Offers Work
The old post presented “free credit, no deposit” as a gift. In practice these offers follow a familiar pattern:
- An agent offers a small amount of game credit to a new user.
- Any winnings from that credit are locked behind a wagering requirement, often many times the credit amount.
- There is usually a cap on how much can be withdrawn, along with time limits.
- To withdraw, the user is often asked to make a real deposit first or to “verify” the account with a payment.
Because every game carries a house edge, most free credit is lost before the conditions are met. The real purpose of the offer is to get a new player to deposit.
Scam Warning Signs
