About Empire of Harsha

Harsha Vardhana (c. 590–647), normally called Harsha, was an Indian emperor who ruled northern India from 606 to 647 from his capital Kannauj. He was the child of Prabhakarvardhana and the more youthful sibling of Rajyavardhana, a ruler of Thanesar in present-day Haryana.

At the peak of his power, his kingdom traversed the Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bengal, Odisha and the whole Indo-Gangetic plain north of the Narmada River.

After the defeat of the earlier Gupta Empire amidst the sixth century, North India returned to little republics and little monarchical states governed by Gupta rulers. Harsha was a convert to Buddhism.

He united the little republics from Punjab to central India, and their agents’ delegated Harsha lord at a gathering in April 606 giving him the title of Maharaja when he was simply 16 years of age. Harsha had a place with Kanojia.

He brought all of northern India under his control. The peace and flourishing that won made his court a central point of cosmopolitanism, pulling in researchers, specialists and religious guests from far and wide.

The Chinese explorer Xuan Zang went to the court of Harsha and composed an exceptionally good record of him, applauding his justice and altruism.

Ruler Harshavardhan was a Shaivite. However, he was tolerant of every single other religion and bolstered them completely. Sooner or later in his life, he turned into a supporter of Buddhism also.

Lord Harshavardhana engendered the religion by developing various stupas for the sake of Buddha.

He had confidence in supporting craftsmanship and writing and even made a few gifts to the Nalanda University. Harsha Vardhana likewise composed three Sanskrit plays, to be specific Nagananda, Ratnavali and Priyadarsika. In 641 BC, he sent a mission to China, which helped in setting up the first political relations between China and India.
