About Zakir Hussain
Born on the 8th of February, in the year 1897, Zakir Hussain was the third president of independent India, after Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.
An intellectual since his early childhood, he was a renowned educationalist and initially served significantly as the governor of the state of Bihar from the period 1957 to 1962 and also as the vice president of India for five years from 1962 to 1967.
He was the first Muslim president of the country and was an active member of India’s freedom movements before its independence. He was also the co-founder of the nationally acclaimed university Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi.
Born in Hyderabad, he shifted to New Delhi in the year 1920 and pursued his higher studies, which included a Ph. D from the Frederick William University in Berlin.
He became the president of India on May 13th, 1967, and during his tenure, he gave his consent to the bill for the nationalization of banks after it was led through a series of debates.
He passed away on 3rd May, 1969 and remains the only president of India to have died in his office. He was buried in the campus of Jamia Milia Islamia, alongside his wife.
