About Tirupati

Located in the Chitoor district of the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati is a very famous pilgrim town in Hinduism, and also happens to be the spiritual capital for the state of Andhra Pradesh.

In fact, it is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in the whole count, fundamentally because it houses the widely popular Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple, alongside a list of other popular temples in Hindu culture.

Other than this aspect, Tirupati is also quite famous for housing a list of renowned educational universities and institutions and was also named the Best Heritage city for the year 2012-2013 by the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Coming to the religious forefront, the term Tirupati is mainly formed with the broken terms “Tiru” that means sacred and also denoted popular Hindu deity Goddess Lakshmi, and “Pati” that means husband, and hence, the term Tirupati basically refers to the heavenly sacred abode of Lord Vishnu.

The place has found mentions in many historical as well as religious manuscripts, one of which is the Varaha Purana, according to which during his return from Lankapuri, popular Hindu deity Lord Rama had resided here along with his wife Goddess Sita and brother Laxman.

The architecture of the popular temple here as inscriptions in multiple languages like Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, and many rulers have contributed to its development, ranging from the reign of the Pallava Kingdom, the Chola Kingdom, as well as the Vijayanagara Empire.

The temple had survived tough times like the British as well as Muslim invasions in the country and hence, went on to become one of the most popular religious places in the country.

While all major Hindu festivals, such as Ugadi, Sankranti, Mahashivaratri, Ganeshotsav, Diwali, Ram Navami, Karthik Poornima, Vaikuntha Ekadasi, etc, are celebrated in great spirits here, the main and most popular festival in this place is the nine days long festival of Sri Venkateshwara Brahmotsavams that takes place during the months of September and October every year. On the food front, Tirupati is famous for the Tirupati Laddoo, which happens to be the main prasadam for the Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple here and is world-famous.
