About Munnar
Located in the Idukki district in the south Indian state of Kerala that is commonly referred to as “God’s own country,” Munnar is a popular hill station as well as a city on the Western Ghats Mountains, at a height of around 1,600 meters above the sea level.
The languages spoken here are Malayam—which is also the official language of the state of Kerala, and English. Historically, it is believed that the name “Munnar” refers to three rivers, as the city is located on the confluence of three rivers, named: Mudhirapuzha River, Nallathanni River, and Kundaly River. Munnar has many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks that guards and protects some of the rare and endangered species of animals.
Some of these are: Kurinjimala Sanctuary, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Amravati Reserve Forest of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, the Eravikulam National Park, the Pampadum Shola National Park, the Anamudi Shola National Park and the work in progress Palani Hills National Park.
The endangered fauna and flora in here as mentioned above, include the grizzled giant squirrel, the Nilgiri Thar, the Nilgiri Langur, the Nilgiri elephants, wood-pigeons, and gaur, as well as the Nilgiri Sambars, and lastly, the Neelakurinji that happens to blossom only once every 12 years.
The temperature in Munnar during the winter season ranges between 5 degrees Celsius to 15 degrees Celsius, while during the summers, it ranges between 15 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius.
