How Often Do Children Need to Wash Their Hair?

470

Caring for a child’s hair can be an important part of their overall hygiene and health. However, determining the right frequency for hair washing can be a challenge, especially for parents who are new to the task. While it is generally recommended for children to wash their hair every two to three days, the actual frequency may vary depending on several factors, such as age, hair type, and activity level. In this article, we will explore the guidelines for hair washing in children and provide tips for maintaining healthy, clean hair. So, it is critical for parents to understand the proper way to care for their child’s hair and to adjust the frequency of hair washing as needed to maintain a healthy scalp and hair.

How Often to Wash Children’s Hair?

It is generally recommended that children wash their hair every two to three days. Several factors, such as your child’s age, hair type, and activity level, will affect how often you wash their hair.

For infants, it is generally recommended to wash their hair every other day or every three days. Infants have very delicate skin and hair, so it is important to use a kid’s shampoo and not scrub the scalp too vigorously.

As children get older and their hair becomes thicker and oilier, they may need to wash their hair more frequently. Children who are active in sports or other physical activities may need to wash their hair more often to remove sweat and dirt. Children with dry or sensitive scalps may benefit from washing their hair less frequently to avoid irritation.

How to Wash your Children’s Hair?

Children frequently dislike washing their hair because the shampoo and water get into their eyes. Bath toys, games, and stories can be useful at times, as can following our tangle-free routine below!

De-Tangle

Before washing, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle long hair. If you begin with tangles, you will almost certainly end up with more. A brush with widely spaced plastic prongs will suffice if you don’t have a comb. These are gentler on the hair than bristles and do not cause as much pulling.

Begin at the ends of your child’s hair and work your way up to the roots. Repeat until the hair can be combed/brushed from root to tip without tangles. If your child’s hair is particularly tangled, comb it through with conditioner or a detangling spray first.

Shampoo

Children under the age of three should have their hair washed using baby shampoo or a diluted version of their own shampoo. Wet your child’s hair thoroughly before applying shampoo.

This produces a good lather and requires less shampoo. Squeeze a coin-size amount of shampoo into your hands and smooth it through their hair. Working from the brow to the nape, lather with both hands in a gentle kneading motion. Long hair should not be piled on top of your child’s head. This can result in knots and awkward de-tangling later on. Allow the lather to run down and thoroughly rinse.

Condition

Conditioner should be applied to the mid-lengths and ends of your child’s hair. You only require a small amount. Rinse the conditioner away. (It’s normal for your child’s hair to be a little slick afterward.)

Towel Dry

With a towel, gently squeeze out any excess moisture. Rubbing can lead to hair breakage and tangles. To gently comb your hair, begin at the tips and work your way up to the roots with a comb rather than a brush. Your child’s hair will be more likely to be damaged if it is wet, and combs are gentler on their hair and will not pull as much as brushes.

Dry

Ideally, your child’s hair should be allowed to air dry. If you must blow-dry their hair, use a low heat setting and keep the dryer at least 15cm (6 inches) away from it. The skin and scalp of a child are extremely sensitive to heat.

Over to You

Finally, the frequency of hair washing will be determined by the child individual needs, which can be determined by observing their scalp and hair. If your scalp is visibly dirty or your hair is greasy, it’s time for a wash. If the scalp and hair appear clean and healthy, you may be able to go a few days without washing.
