About Yamunotri
The main source of popular holy River Yamuna, and also the grand seat of Hindu deity, Goddess Yamuna, Yamunotri is a popular Hindu pilgrim spot in India that happens to be one among the four holy shrines in the country that together form India’s Chhota-Char Sham pilgrimage. The other three in this series include the Gangotri, the Kdearnath, and the Badrinath.
Yamunotri is prominently located in the Uttarkashi district in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand, up in the Garhwal Himalayas. The major spots of pilgrim attraction in the place include the Yamunotri Temple, devoted to Goddess Yamuna, and the Janki Chatti: a holy thermal spring located here.
The deity of Goddess Yamuna in the temple here is made out of black marble and was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. In Hindu culture, both the holy rivers Ganges and Yamuna are regarded as mother figures for pillaring the Indian civilization in its sacred embrace.
According to legend, the place served as Saint Asit Muni’s hermitage in ancient times, and he would often take his daily baths in the holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna.
It is said that when he began struggling with old age that hindered him from going to take a dip in the Ganges, a stream of Ganges showed up right opposite to River Yamuna. Yamunotri and the temple here opens every year on the auspicious day of akshay Tritya: a popular Hindu festival, which takes place in the last week of April or the beginning of May and closes during the widely celebrated festival of Diwali, which takes place in the month of October.
For the rest of the year, the entire place is covered with scenic beauty in the form of sleeks of crystal white snow and all the temple staff retreat to their villages during this time.

Many hot springs emerge from the cavities of the mountains that surround the place and the most primitive kund here out of all is the Surya Kund, and right next to it lays the popular Shila known as the Divya Shila.
