About Ranikhet

Located in the Almora district in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India, Ranikhet is a cantonment and a very popular hill station, standing at an elevation of around 1,869 meters above the sea level.

The place maintained by the Indian Army and houses the Military Hospital of the Kumaon Regiment, as well as the Naga Regiment.

The official language of this region is Kumaoni, and according to the statistics of the year 2012, the total population of this region is around 55,000 people.

Ranikhet was founded by Kartik Belwal, and its name, which literally means “Queen’s Meadow” in Hindi, is believed to be originated by the belief that it was this very place where King Sudhardev had lost his heart to his queen Queen Padmini.

Previously, the city of Ranikhet was under the rule of the Nepalese rulers, as well as the Kumaonese people. It became a part of India after the British invaded it and started treating it as a summer resort to beat the heat.

The place is rich in flora and fauna and is surrounded by dense oak and pine forests. The different wildlife species found here include leopards, sambar, barking deer, mountain goats, leopard cats, red-faced monkeys, Indian hare, pine martens, etc.

The temperature remains extremely pleasant throughout the year, and Ranikhet gets snowfall in the winter months of December, January, and February, which is a rare sight in a relatively warm country like India. The temperature during the summer months here is moderate.
