About Nainital

Situated in the Nainital district of the northern state of Uttarakhand in India, Nainital is a popular hill station that also serves as the district headquarters of the Nainital district.

Standing at an elevation of around 2,084 meters above the sea level, the main languages spoken is Hindi as well as Kumaoni. According to the 2011 census of India, the total population is over 41,377 people.

Geographically, it is surrounded by a list of tall mountains, which are: the Naina Mountain, at a height of 2,615 meters, the Deopatha Mountain, at a height of 2,438 meters, and the Ayarpatha Mountain, at a height of 2,278 meters. The mountains surround Nainital from the north, west, and south directions respectively.

The Naina peak as the figure says is the tallest among the others, and is also known by the name of China Peak. Nainital has a set up of a valley that consists of a lake, which is in the shape of a pear having the circumference of two miles.

During the winter months of December, January, and February, Nainital witnesses snowfall, which is a rare sight in a warm country like India. During the summer season, the climate remains temperate.

The most popular spot is the Naini Lake, which is believed to be one of the Shakti Peethas in India, wherein Goddess Sati’s body part fell when her husband Lord Shiva was carrying her. The name Nainital quite literally means “the lake of the eye,” since it is believed that Goddess Sati’s eye fell here.
