About Jyotir Math
Located in the city of Jyotirmath in India, Jyotir Math, also known as Jyotir Pitha, is a popular monastery that serves as a prominent Hindu pilgrimage center.
Also referred to be the name of Uttaramanaya Matha, the monastery is one among the four cardinals established by Adi Shankara, a popular Indian theologian and philosopher in an era as early as the 8th century CE.
Like all of the other three cardinals, the leader of Jyotir Math too bears the title of Shankaracharya, in reference to the name of the founder of the monastery, Adi Shankara.
The vital spots of pilgrim attraction here in Jyotir Math are the Laxmi Narayan Temple, the Jyoteshwar Temple, as well as the Amar Kalpvriksha—a mulberry tree regarded as a holy and immortal object since it is believed to have survived for a period over 2,500 years and also the place under which the founder of the place, Adi Shankara used to perform penance for as long as five years.
Right near the tree, one can find a cave where there’s a Shiva Linga, which is believed to have been installed by Adi Shankara himself, and it is also said that after his tough hours of penance every day, he would often go inside the cave to take some rest.
Some of the other popular temples one can visit in Jyotir Math are the Narsimha Temple and the Vasudev Temple.
