About Independence Day of India
The Independence Day of India, also known as the SwantantrataDiwas in Hindi, is celebrated every year on the 15th of August to commemorate India’s freedom from the British rule in the year 1947.
It was on this day that the United Kingdom government passed the Indian Independence Act, 1947, and transferred the entire legislative sovereignty to the hands of the Indian Constituent Assembly.
India’s milestone of attaining independence from the British Raj came after the Independence Movement, which is still remembered for its major non-violence resistance as well as civil disobedience, which was led by the Indian National Congress.
The day is observed as a national holiday in the whole country.
However, the independence of India wasn’t blanketed in complete peace. It came with the Partition of India, wherein British India was divided into two parts: India and Pakistan.
This partition brought with it riots, violence, both of which resulted in mass casualties, as this partition was coated with religious discrepancies, and this resulted in the displacement of approximately 15 million people, due to protests and violence on religious grounds.
It was on the first Independence Day of India, that is 15th of August, 1947, that the first Prime Minister of independent India Jawaharlal Nehru, had hoisted the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the red Fort, situated in New Delhi.
And ever since then it has been customary, wherein every year the prime minister of India raises the national flag of the country the same way at the same place on Independence Day, before addressing the nation.
On this national holiday, various places, like, educational institutes, residential colonies, offices, etc. hoist the national flag of India in the morning.
Parades and cultural events too are held to celebrate this day. No official word is done in institutes as well as offices, but sweets are distributed for celebration.
Patriotic songs, including the national song of the country, are played at various places to give wings to the patriotic spirits of the citizens and pay respect to all the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to help India gain freedom.
