United Airlines provides various economy-class ticket options, including standard, Economy Plus and basic economy tickets. In this article, we’ll go over the differences between them, such as baggage allowance and seat selection options.

With a basic economy ticket, passengers are permitted to bring one personal item that fits under the seat in front of them, such as a purse or backpack. Many United Elite status members and select credit cards offer complimentary checked bags when travelling in economy class.

Cost

United Airlines provides budget-minded travellers with an economical domestic flight option: Basic Economy tickets. However, these fares come with restrictions that you might find disfavorable; such as not offering free seat selection services or changing flight tickets without incurring fees; furthermore, passengers flying Basic Economy don’t earn the same number of miles as passengers in other fare classes.

Basic economy ticket costs depend on your route and number of checked bags; for instance, flying domestically between Los Angeles and New York costs $212 while Economy fare per seat will cost $86 each for three family members booking Economy seats; by purchasing three basic economy tickets instead, they could save $116 while sitting together.

Basic economy tickets allow one personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you, and any full-size carry-on bags require payment of a checked baggage fee; on short flights, this should not be an issue, while for longer haul flights it may be worthwhile upgrading to the regular economy for increased luggage allowance.

Passengers holding basic economy tickets can still select seats during online or mobile check-in, however once at the airport they will be assigned one. Furthermore, airlines charge a seating service fee as standard practice; so it is wise to check this information prior to purchasing tickets.

Baggage allowance

United Airlines offers three different economy class fares – standard economy, Economy Plus and basic economy. While similar in nature, each has different rules and restrictions regarding carry-on bags, seat selection and elite earnings.

Passengers traveling on basic economy tickets are only allowed one personal item that fits in the overhead bin, do not qualify for seat selection or upgrades and do not accumulate as many award miles as those traveling with regular economy tickets.

United’s rules on baggage allowance can also cause confusion for customers, with an example being Ron, who flew to Florida with a basic economy ticket but was denied boarding because his bag was too large. When he complained to United, they refused to change his flight and accused him of not following their policies properly.

If you’re planning to travel on a basic economy ticket, there are a few workarounds you can use to help reduce expenses. For instance, using an airline credit card that allows two free bags checks may help save money; just keep in mind these cards often come with other perks as well.

Seating

United Economy and Basic Economy tickets have some key distinctions that separate them, albeit both being low cost fares. Each one may impose unique restrictions regarding seating arrangements, boarding procedures, carry-on bags, upgrades and changes as well as elite earning potential. Even though both fare types offer comparable cabin service and entertainment offerings; it is important that passengers understand these differences before reserving a flight with either fare type.

As opposed to economy class flights, basic economy tickets do not allow passengers to select their seats ahead of time and you will incur fees for checked and gate handling bags when arriving with full-sized carry-on bags at the airport. Furthermore, basic economy flights often have smaller overhead bin spaces which make larger carry-on bags difficult or impossible to fit inside; additionally only one personal item of 17x10x9 inches or smaller can be brought aboard the plane.

Basic Economy tickets are ideal for travelers traveling light who do not mind paying additional fees, while regular United Airlines flyers who want more flexibility and amenities may find regular economy tickets more suitable; Chase’s United Explorer Card with one-time United Club passes is an excellent solution, plus has an affordable annual fee to help reduce costs associated with this ticket.

Refundability

Airline tickets can be costly, but there are ways to reduce costs when booking travel. One such way is the United Economy Class fare, which offers similar amenities as the traditional economy at a lower cost; however, this fare comes with limited baggage allowance and assigned seats – restrictions which can be waived with elite status or United co-branded credit card membership.

United’s economy class fares offer food, in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi access; you can select your seat ahead of time which makes traveling with children much simpler. These tickets are non-refundable or changeable but preferred seating can be purchased for an additional fee.

If you plan on traveling with United, keep in mind that they only permit one personal item into the cabin at one time. If your bag exceeds this maximum allowed size, it may be forced to be checked – an often-frustrating practice at airports that can lead to lost baggage claims and lost opportunities. In this video from United’s YouTube channel, a representative is seen forcibly making one passenger check her bag because it was too large.

Although airline policies are clearly written, many customers still become confused by them – especially regarding personal items. If you fly frequently, the basic economy should be avoided at all costs as it will prevent you from earning elite status.
