1win Betting in India: Legal Status and Risks

418

1win is an offshore online betting and casino brand that has heavily advertised to Indian users, especially around cricket. Many people search for it to find out what it offers and whether it is legal to use. This guide gives a neutral picture: what 1win is, what Indian law says in 2026, what the government has done about offshore betting sites, and the risks for users. We do not link to 1win or any betting site, and we do not give betting tips.

Our old post on this topic read like an advertisement. It praised bonuses, explained how to sign up and deposit money, and wrongly described the service as legal in India. We have replaced it with this explainer.

What Is 1win?

According to public records summarised on Wikipedia, 1win is an online bookmaker and gambling platform founded in 2016 and registered in Willemstad, Curacao, a Caribbean island known for issuing gambling licences to online operators. It offers sports betting, including on cricket and football, esports betting, and online casino games. The company operates across Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia, and it sponsors esports teams and well known sports personalities.

Being registered or licensed in Curacao does not make a betting service legal in India. Each country sets its own rules, and Indian law now bans online money games outright.

Is 1win Legal in India?

The Online Gaming Act of 2025

Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act in August 2025, and it came into force on 1 May 2026 along with new rules. The law does three main things:

  • Bans online money games: No one may offer an online game where users pay or stake money in the hope of winning more, whether the game is based on chance, skill or both. Online sports betting and casino games fall in this group.
  • Bans advertising: Promoting such games, including through social media, influencers and sports sponsorship, is not allowed.
  • Bans payments: Banks, payment apps and other financial companies may not process payments for online money games.

The same law supports esports and online social games that involve no money stakes, which can be registered with a new Online Gaming Authority. So, put simply, using real money betting services such as 1win is not legal in India in 2026, and Indian payment systems are not supposed to handle those payments. You can read about how digital payments changed everyday life in India and why their misuse by illegal platforms is a concern.

The Older Gambling Laws

Before the 2025 Act, gambling was mainly regulated by the states, under the Public Gambling Act of 1867 and state laws based on it. Casinos are allowed only in a few places such as Goa, Daman and Sikkim. Offshore betting sites worked in a grey zone by claiming that no specific law covered online play from abroad. The 2025 Act closes that gap for the whole country.

Penalties Under the Act

Offence First offence Repeat offence
Offering an online money game Up to 3 years in jail, a fine up to 1 crore rupees, or both 3 to 5 years and a fine of 1 to 2 crore rupees
Processing payments for such games Up to 3 years, a fine up to 1 crore rupees, or both 3 to 5 years and a fine of 1 to 2 crore rupees
Advertising such games Up to 2 years, a fine up to 50 lakh rupees, or both 2 to 3 years and a fine of 50 lakh to 1 crore rupees

The law targets those who offer, advertise or process payments for online money games. The government has said players are treated as victims rather than offenders, so the Act does not punish people for playing. Even so, users face real risks, explained below. This article is general information, not legal advice.

What the Government Has Done

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has been ordering internet providers to block betting, gambling and gaming websites. In reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, the government said that by 28 March 2026 it had acted against 8,376 such web addresses, many of them offshore platforms.

Enforcement agencies have also gone after the money trail. In a separate case involving another offshore brand, 1xBet, the Enforcement Directorate attached assets and questioned celebrities who had promoted it. This shows that promoters and payment handlers, not just operators, can face action.

Betting brands often respond to blocks by opening mirror sites, which are copies of the same service on new web addresses. 1win has used mirror domains in Russia, where it is blocked as an unlicensed bookmaker.

How Offshore Betting Sites Reach Indian Users

Because their websites are blocked and their apps are not allowed on official app stores in India, offshore betting brands use other routes. Common ones include:

  • App files shared for direct download outside the Play Store, which can carry malware.
  • Links passed around on Telegram, WhatsApp and Instagram, often by paid promoters.
  • Mirror websites with slightly changed names.
  • Surrogate brands that look like news, sports score or free gaming sites but lead users to betting pages.

Each of these routes adds risk, since users cannot easily tell who really runs the service.

Problems Reported in Other Countries

  • Kazakhstan: Authorities blocked 1win in 2023 and opened a criminal investigation. They said the site took payments without proper checks on users and that minors could take part. Four suspected organisers were placed on an international wanted list.
  • Russia: The service is blocked as an unlicensed bookmaker.
  • Ukraine: It drew attention for operating without a licence.

Risks for Users

Your Data

In November 2024, 1win suffered a large data breach. Attackers copied records of roughly 96 to 100 million users, including email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, dates of birth and scrambled passwords. Parts of the data were later posted on hacker forums. Anyone who ever signed up should change any password they reused elsewhere and watch out for scam calls and messages.

Your Money

  • No legal protection: If an offshore site refuses to pay or freezes your account, there is no Indian regulator to complain to.
  • Payment traps: Illegal platforms often collect money through personal UPI IDs or so called mule bank accounts. Such accounts can be frozen by police, and the money may never come back.
  • Bonus terms: Large welcome bonuses usually come with strict wagering conditions that make withdrawals hard.

Our guide on avoiding card fraud has tips that also help if you have shared card details with a risky website.

Warning Signs of a Betting Scam

  • Promises of guaranteed wins, sure shot tips or fixed matches.
  • Requests to pay into a personal UPI ID or a stranger’s bank account.
  • A demand for extra tax or fees before you can withdraw winnings.
  • Pressure from a tipster or group admin to deposit quickly.

Your Wellbeing

Betting is designed to keep people playing. Losing money can lead to chasing losses, debt, stress and family conflict. These risks are higher for young people, who are the main target of betting ads on social media and during cricket matches.

Cricket, Ads and Influencers

Cricket is the sport most linked with betting ads in India. Big tournaments draw huge audiences, and offshore brands have used surrogate ads, social media influencers and fake news style pages to reach fans. Under the 2025 Act, advertising online money games is itself an offence, so fans should be wary of any post that promises easy winnings. Where to Get Help

If betting is causing money problems or stress for you or someone you know, talk to a trusted person or a doctor. India’s free mental health helpline, Tele MANAS, can be reached by dialling 14416, at any time. You can also read our post on mental health awareness in India. If you have lost money to a betting or gaming scam, report it on the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.

What We Changed From the Old Post

We removed all promotion of 1win, including the bonus offer, payment methods, sign up steps and a link to an affiliate site. We corrected the description of the brand and replaced the claim that it operates legally in India with an accurate account of the 2025 Online Gaming Act, government blocking, the 2024 data breach and the risks to users.
