About Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya
Born on the 15th of September, in the year 1860, Mokshagundan Visvesvarayya, popularly known as Sir M.V., was a renowned statesman, who worked for public good, and was also a notable scholar, engineer, who served as the Diwan of Mysore, for a period of seven years, from 1912 to 1918.
His contributions to the field of engineering has been splendid, significantly for his role as the chief engineer in the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, located in Mysore, and also for his active participation as the chief designer in Hyderabad, for the construction of the city’s flood protection system.
Winner of the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1955, he was also honored with the title of Knight Commander by King George V, for his remarkable contribution for public good and welfare. Apart from the engineering sector, he has also been eminent in the field of education.
In his honor and memory, his date of birth, i.e. the 15th of September is celebrated as Engineers’ Day in India. His name is fondly remembered, with a number of engineering institutes in India, named after him, such as the Visveswaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur and the University Visveswaraya College of Engineering in Bangalore.
He passed away on the 14th of April, 1962.
