About International Day of Peace

Also known unofficially as World Peace Day, International Peace Day is observed every year on the 21st of September. The purpose of this day is to promote world peace and encourage that war and violence stay abstinent globally throughout all time of the year.

It is a vital part of the global peace movement. This day is also treated as a day of temporary ceasefire in zones where combats might be taking place with the sole aim of accentuating humanitarian aid access.

The International Day of Peace was first celebrated in the year 1982, and as of today is being observed by the majority of the nations, political groups, military groups, as well as common people.

It was in the year 2013 that the Secretary-General of the United Nations first declared that the International Day of Peace on the 21st of September will be dedicated to peace education, which is one of the major preventive measures to reduce violence and war, extensively.

At the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, the Peace Bell is rung in order to inaugurate this day. This bell has been cast from coins that have been donated by children from all continents in the globe, excluding Africa, and as a whole, it was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, apparently as a token of reminder of the ‘’human cost of war.’’ The inscription on the side of this Peace Bell says, ‘’Long live absolute world peace.’’

Every year, the International Day of Peace is observed with a new unique theme, and for this year, the theme chosen is– Together for Peace: Respect, Safety, and Dignity for All.

The theme of 2016 was—The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace, while in 2015, the theme was: Partnerships for Peace—Dignity for All.
