Bypoll Results 2026: Ruling Parties Win All Six Seats
New Delhi: The bypoll results 2026 are out, and the ruling party has won in every state and in Puducherry. Votes were counted on Friday, 9 October 2026, for five Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat. The BJP won Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal and the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. In Tamil Nadu, the ruling TVK won Madurantakam and Dharapuram. In Puducherry, the ruling AINRC won Thattanchavady.
A bypoll, also called a byelection, is a fresh vote held when a seat falls vacant before the end of its term. This can happen when a member resigns, dies or chooses to keep another seat.

- Nandigram, West Bengal: Hasi Rani Rath (BJP) won by 1,22,753 votes.
- Rejinagar, West Bengal: Shankharavh Sarkar (BJP) won by 75,816 votes.

West Bengal: BJP wins Nandigram and Rejinagar
Nandigram
In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath got 1,64,427 votes. Congress candidate Milan Pradhan came second with 41,674 votes. The Hindu called it a record margin for the seat.
The seat fell vacant because Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had won from two seats in the last Assembly election. He decided to keep Bhabanipur, where he had defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and gave up Nandigram.
Rejinagar
In Rejinagar, in Murshidabad district, BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar got 1,29,914 votes. Golam Nabi Azad of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) got 54,098 votes. The Hindu reported that Mr Sarkar won about 63 per cent of the votes.
This bypoll was needed because AJUP leader Humayun Kabir had won both Rejinagar and Nowda in the last election. He kept Nowda. The Hindu described Rejinagar as a Muslim majority seat and called the BJP win there a surprise.
Mr Adhikari claimed that the BJP got around 60 per cent of Muslim votes in Rejinagar and 80 per cent in Nandigram. This is his claim and has not been checked by any official count. The CPI(M) alleged irregularities in the polls, which the party called “vote loot”.
Assam: BJP takes Nagaon Lok Sabha seat
In the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma got 7,14,349 votes. Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) got 5,72,125 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora came third with 1,29,492 votes. A total of 15 candidates were in the fight.
PTI reported that Mr Sharma, 59, is a former IAS officer. The bypoll was held because Pradyut Bordoloi, who won the seat for the Congress, left the party and joined the BJP. PTI said Mr Bordoloi won the seat in 2024 by more than 2,12,230 votes, so this result marks a big change in the seat.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the win came from development work done under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the result was “a message to Rahul Gandhi”.
Tamil Nadu: TVK wins both seats
Both Tamil Nadu seats are reserved constituencies. Voting there took place on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. The bypolls were needed after two AIADMK MLAs, K. Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama, resigned. Both later joined the ruling TVK and contested again on its ticket.
Madurantakam
Ms Kumaravel got 74,048 votes. DMK candidate I. Paranthamen got 54,008 votes, and AIADMK candidate S. Kanitha Sampath got 47,450 votes. The Hindu reported a turnout of 86.26 per cent. Turnout means the share of voters who actually voted. It was lower than the 93.22 per cent recorded in the April and May Assembly election.
Dharapuram
Ms Sathyabama got 66,841 votes. DMK candidate S. Suganya got 57,370 votes, and AIADMK candidate K. Banumathi got 45,280 votes. Turnout here was 80.3 per cent, The Hindu said.
With these two wins, the TVK now has 109 members in the 234 member Tamil Nadu Assembly. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay called the wins a victory for the people and for “political decorum”. DMK president M.K. Stalin called the result a “temporary victory for the politics of betrayal”.
Puducherry: AINRC holds Thattanchavady
In Thattanchavady, AINRC candidate Ashok Anand got 13,358 votes. Congress candidate E. Vinayagam got 4,876 votes. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister Rangasamy gave it up to keep another seat he had won.
What leaders said about the results
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters in a post on X. He said the results in Nagaon, Nandigram and Rejinagar showed that people have a deep connect with the good governance agenda of the BJP and NDA. He also congratulated the AINRC, an NDA partner, for its Puducherry win.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the results showed that people had completely rejected the opposition alliance. Opposition parties, on their part, questioned how the polls were held.
Why bypolls matter to voters
A bypoll does not change who runs a state on its own. But it gives people in that area a voice in the Assembly or Lok Sabha again. It also shows how the mood of voters may be changing between big elections.
Every vote counts in such contests. You can read more about the value of voting on National Voters Day and about the International Day of Democracy. To know more about one of the states that voted, see our guide to Tamil Nadu’s history and geography.
