Anti Terrorism Day – 21st of May
About Anti Terrorism Day
India observes anti-terrorism day on the 21st of May every year. The date 21st May is the same day when India’s former prime minister Rajeev Gandhi set on his journey of martyrdom after he was assassinated in the year 1991.
He was one of the most cherished and eminent prime ministers of the country of India and hence, his martyrdom day was chosen to be celebrated as Anti Terrorism Day, not just to commemorate his contributions and pay tribute to him for all he did for the nation, but also bring light on the circumstances that we common people need to be aware of and the precautions we need to take in our day to day lives to make sure terrorism doesn’t dampen our days and adversely affect our lives.
On this day, a two minutes silence is observed during the day in order to pay respect and tribute to the sad demise of Rajeev Gandhi and each and every innocent individual who has perished because of acts of terrorism in the country.
The day strives to focus on restoring India’s peace, unity, and harmony. The main objective of the anti-terrorism day in India is to eradicate terrorism from the country to the maximum limits.
Many seminars take place on this day focusing on anti-terrorism measures and floral wreaths are also laid on the statue of Rajeev Gandhi, and many marches are carried out in the country to pay tribute. An anti-terrorism pledge is taken by the officials in government offices as well as public undertakings.
The pledge is as follows: We, the people of India, having abiding faith in our country’s tradition of non-violence and tolerance, hereby solemnly affirm to oppose our strength, all forms of terrorism and violence.
We pledge to uphold and promote peace, social harmony, and understand among all fellow human beings and fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values.
