About Calicut University
University is also known as the University of Calicut is a state university which is run by the Kerala state. It is headquartered at Thenjipalam in the Malappuram district of India. Calicut University was established in 1968 and is the second oldest university was set up in Kerela after the university of Kerala. Calicut University is affiliated by the University Grants Commission of India. Currently, the university has 30+ post-graduate departments and 426 colleges.
Calicut University is home to several different departments spreading across science commerce or arts. The most important departments include Commerce and management studies, Botany, Zoology, Mass Communication, Multimedia Communication, Mathematics, English, Hindi, Russia, Arabic, Sanskrit, School of health sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, Biotechnology, etc.
Calicut University is also affiliated to approximately 480 + colleges with an annual intake of 1,00,000 + students. The college offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The college comprises of 250+ arts and science colleges, 63 training colleges, 40 engineering colleges, etc.
Calicut University was established in the year 1968. This was the time when C.H. Muhammed Koya was the Education Minister of Kerala. The university was administered by Dr M.M. Ghani in 1970. The campus of the university is huge and the campus locales are spread across a whopping 500 acres (or 2.0 km) in the outskirts of the rural area of Malappuram. The area put aside the campus gives the feel of a hill station.
Arts and Sports:
Calicut University is very active in extracurricular activities.
Art Festival: The annual art festival is named as ‘Kalolsavam’ is every year held during January – April. It is an inter-zonal festival and is conducted for the students of the 5 districts in which the university spreads its area.
The 5 districts conduct the various competition and the winners of each district get an entry to the final interzonal festival. This festival goes on for about 6-7 days. During these days, students showcase their talents both onstage and offstage.
Once a year, the annual sports festival also takes place amongst the students of different zones the sports festival generally goes on for a week as many sports are played during this time.
- In 2018, Calicut University was ranked as 21 in India by the rankings given by NIRF (National Institute of Ranking) and the 101-150 band across the globe.
