About Ramaswamy Venkataraman
Born on the 4th of December in the year 1910, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, also known simply by the name R. Venkataraman was a famous politician who started off his career as a lawyer, and then went on to be a part of a number of India’s freedom movements.
An independence activist, he served as a Union Minister for a long period before being elected as the eighth president of independent India.
Studying law after his school education, he started practicing in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India. At a very young age, he became a significant member in the Quit India Movement and was soon selected as the member of the provisional cabinet and the constituent assembly.
Before being the president, he played key roles serving as the Union Defense Minister and Finance Minister of the country and in the year 1984, he was chosen as the seventh vice president of the country, before taking over office as the president in the year 1987. He remained the president of India for a period of five years until 1992.
An intellectual, he had authored a number of books, such as “My President Years,” “The Role of a Private Member of Parliament,” and “Relevance of Gandhi: And Other Essays,” among other books.
He passed away on the 27th of January, 2009 at the age of 98.
