Hyundai to Invest $15.5 Billion in India Through 2032

4

New Delhi: Hyundai Motor Group, the South Korean company behind Hyundai and Kia cars, will invest $15.5 billion in India from 2026 through 2032. The Hindu BusinessLine put the amount at about Rs 1.47 lakh crore. The group announced the plan on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, after its Executive Chair Euisun Chung met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The company calls India a “strategic core market” for its future growth. Reuters described it as a deeper bet on the world’s third largest car market. Here is a simple guide to the Hyundai investment in India and what is still not known.

Hyundai investment in India: the key facts

  • Amount: $15.5 billion over seven years, from 2026 through 2032.
  • Who: Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai Motor India and Kia India.
  • Research: about $700 million for the group’s research and development centre in India, including a vehicle testing track.
  • New company: a dedicated investment entity will be set up in India to plan and manage the spending.
  • Jobs: the group already employs more than 24,000 people in India. It says more jobs will come, but it has not given a number.

Where will the money go?

The group’s statement lists four main areas. Apart from the research figure, it did not say how the $15.5 billion will be split between them.

1. Bigger factories

Hyundai plans to raise production capacity at both Hyundai Motor India and Kia India to support what it calls “significant volume growth”. It also wants India to become one of its leading export bases.

2. Research and new technology

About $700 million is planned for the research centre in India, including a vehicle testing track. The aim is to develop next generation car technology in India and to train more local engineers.

3. Local parts makers

The group will invest in Indian partner companies and suppliers. The idea is to get more car parts made in India and build a stronger supply chain.

4. Future mobility

Hyundai will back promising startups and new mobility services linked to its car business. It will also look at new businesses such as car financing, charging points for electric vehicles, and recycling of old vehicles at the end of their life.

Korea Herald reported that Hyundai has built a prototype electric three wheeler with TVS Motor Company and is aiming for a commercial launch by late 2027.

What did Euisun Chung say?

“India remains one of Hyundai Motor Group’s most important and strategic markets globally. The past 30 years have been defined by our commitment to India. This investment reaffirms our commitment to India for the next 30 years and beyond,” Chung said in the company statement.

He added that the group would “create more employment opportunities” and work with its partners “to support India’s continued industrial development”.

Hyundai first came to India in 1996. Korea Herald and The Asia Business Daily said this was the eighth meeting between Chung and Prime Minister Modi.

Hyundai’s plants in India today

The group says it can already make more than 1.4 million vehicles a year in India. This capacity comes from three places:

  • Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Hyundai Motor India plants that can make 824,000 vehicles a year.
  • Pune, Maharashtra: Hyundai’s newest plant, which can make 170,000 vehicles a year. The company says this will be raised in phases.
  • Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh: the Kia India plant, which can make 431,000 vehicles a year.

Is all of this new money?

That is not fully clear. Reuters noted that Hyundai said last year it would invest $5 billion to expand its manufacturing and research work in India. The Hindu BusinessLine, quoting sources, reported that the new $15.5 billion plan includes the Rs 45,000 crore that Hyundai Motor Company announced last October for the period up to 2030. The company statement itself does not say how much of the total is fresh money.

Why carmakers want to build in India

India is the third largest car market in the world, after China and the United States. Many global car companies are putting money into Indian factories. Reuters noted that Japan’s Suzuki Motor, the majority owner of Maruti Suzuki, laid out plans in 2025 to invest about $8 billion in India. Toyota and Honda have also said they will expand manufacturing here.

Demand has been strong. CNBC, citing the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, reported that passenger car sales hit a monthly record of 439,000 units in August, more than 36 per cent higher than a year earlier.

Korea Herald pointed to another reason. India charges import duties of 70 to 110 per cent on cars brought in from abroad, so making cars locally makes sense. The paper said Chung also described India as a gateway for exports to markets such as the Middle East and Africa.

What it could mean for India

If the plan goes ahead as described, it could mean more cars made in India for local buyers and for export, more orders for Indian parts makers, and more engineering work in research. Big factory plans under Make in India are not new. One earlier example is Lava’s plan to fund two manufacturing units under Make in India.

The group also plans a skills institute in Chennai, the Hyundai Academy for Technical Skills. Since 2016, its main companies have spent about $110 million on social welfare, education and skills in India, it said.

For buyers, the focus on charging points and new technology fits a wider shift. If you are weighing your options, read our guide on the difference between petrol, diesel and electric cars, or see our list of top electric cars in India with price.

Some key details are still missing. The group has not said how much new capacity it will add, in which plants, or how many jobs the plan will create. These are the points to watch in the coming months.
