Below is a brief explanation of how a normal human body’s energy expenditure takes place, what it indicates and can it really help in shedding some kilos without regular exercise—

Basal Metabolic Rate

Also known as Resting Metabolic Rate, BMR refers to the amount of energy; that is calories you burn when your body is not doing any activity and is at complete rest. 60% of your body’s energy expenditure is contributed by the BMR, as it helps fuel certain metabolism, brain, and heart functions in your body.

Thermal Effects of Foods

The TEF refers to the amount of energy your body burns in order to digest the food that you have eaten. The highest in thermal effect is protein among other nutrients, and the TEF contributes around 15% of your body’s energy expenditure.

Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

As the name suggests, this refers to the number of calories you burn when you go for some real deal physical work out sessions, be it cross-fit, plank, hitting the treadmill, etc.

This gives you more liberty since you can totally control the amount of workout you do, the intensity of it to decide how much calories you want to burn.

However, you will be happy to know that this is not the only way you can shed those extra pounds. Check the next point for knowing it further—

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

This is the fun part! NEAT—Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis refers to the number of calories you burn when you do simple day to day activities that need you to move, instead of categorically working out.

It can be taking the stairs, going on a stroll with your pet in the neighborhood, walking to the nearest grocery store, etc.

The good news?

NEAT contributes more to your body’s energy expenditure than Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, which means, you can actually lose weight the simpler way just by being active in your daily life!

So here are some quick tips to actually gear you up for NEAT, since technology has eaten half of our daily lives, stopping us from moving—

  • Always take a walk, at home or office, after every meal you finish.
  • If you’re binge-watching a TV series, be it some saas-bahu soap, or Game of Thrones, make sure to get up and take a walk as soon as one episode finishes.
  • Always take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Drink a glass of water every hour, walk for 5 minutes and then get back to work. You will feel rejuvenated for the better!
