How to Play 3 Patti: Rules, Hand Rankings and Odds
3 Patti, also written Teen Patti, is one of the most popular card games in India. The name simply means three cards. It is often played at family gatherings and card parties around festivals, and it has many online versions. This guide explains how the game works, the hand rankings and the real odds of each hand. It also explains the law in India, including the national ban on online money games that came into force in 2026, and how to keep the game a harmless pastime.
Our old post on this topic encouraged readers to bet in online casinos and called the game a way to earn passive income. That was wrong and unsafe advice, so we have rewritten it as a neutral guide. We do not link to any betting site or app.

What Is 3 Patti?
3 Patti is a gambling card game that grew out of the old English game of three card brag, with some influence from poker. It is popular across South Asia and is also called flush or flash in some areas. Each player gets three cards, and players bet on who holds the best hand. Unlike poker, there is no drawing or swapping of cards, so the game is fast and simple to learn.
In many homes, card games are part of festival evenings, especially around Diwali. You can read about the festival in our post on Diwali.
Basic Rules
Cards and Players
The game uses a standard pack of 52 cards without jokers, though some variations add jokers as wild cards. It is usually played by three to six people. One player deals three cards face down to each player.
The Boot
Before the cards are dealt, each player puts a small fixed amount into the middle. This starting amount is called the boot, and it forms the pot that the winner takes. In friendly games, people often use chips, matchsticks or points instead of money.
Blind and Seen Players
A special feature of 3 Patti is that you can play without looking at your cards. A player who has not seen their cards is a blind player. A player who has looked is a seen player.
- A blind player bets at least half the amount a seen player would.
- A seen player must bet at least double the current blind amount.
Playing blind is cheaper but riskier, since you are betting without knowing your hand.
Chaal and Pack
Players take turns clockwise. On your turn, you either place a bet to stay in, called chaal, or fold, which is called pack. A player who packs loses whatever they have already put in the pot. Bets usually have limits agreed before the game, so that a raise cannot be more than twice the previous bet.
Sideshow
A seen player can ask the seen player who bet just before them for a sideshow. If that player agrees, the two compare cards privately, and the one with the weaker hand must pack. If the hands are equal, the player who asked for the sideshow packs. The other player can refuse the request. A blind player cannot ask for a sideshow.
Show
Betting continues until only two players remain. Then one of them can pay for a show, and both reveal their cards. The higher hand wins the pot. If everyone else packs, the last player left wins without showing cards.
House rules vary a great deal, so players should agree on all rules before starting.
Hand Rankings
From highest to lowest, the hands are:
- Trail or set: Three cards of the same rank, such as three kings. Three aces is the best hand in the game.
- Pure sequence: Three cards in a row of the same suit, such as 7, 8 and 9 of hearts.
- Sequence: Three cards in a row of mixed suits.
- Colour: Three cards of the same suit that are not in a row.
- Pair: Two cards of the same rank.
- High card: Any hand that is none of the above, judged by its highest card.
For sequences, the highest is ace, king, queen, followed by ace, two, three, then king, queen, jack and so on down to four, three, two. King, ace, two does not count as a sequence. Readers who know poker can compare these with our guide to poker hand rankings.
The Real Odds of Each Hand
There are 22,100 possible three card hands from a 52 card pack. The table shows how many of them make each type of hand.
| Hand | Number of ways | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Trail | 52 | 0.24 percent |
| Pure sequence | 48 | 0.22 percent |
| Sequence | 720 | 3.26 percent |
| Colour | 1,096 | 4.96 percent |
| Pair | 3,744 | 16.94 percent |
| High card | 16,440 | 74.39 percent |
Notice that a pure sequence is actually slightly rarer than a trail, yet a trail ranks higher in most versions. About three hands in four are just a high card. These numbers show why nobody can expect to win steadily. Luck decides the cards you are dealt.
Popular Variations
Families and friends often play their own versions. A few common ones are:
- Joker or wild card games: One card, or a card picked at random, is treated as wild and can stand for any card.
- Best of four: Each player gets four cards and uses the best three.
- Lowball: The rankings are reversed, so the weakest hand wins.
- Kiss, miss and bliss: Players get five cards, and certain pairs count as wild cards.
Because variations change the odds, everyone at the table should know which version is being played before the first hand.
Is 3 Patti a Game of Skill or Chance?
This question matters under Indian law. Years ago, the Supreme Court of India compared rummy with the three card game known as flush or brag. It said rummy needs considerable skill, but the three card game is a game of pure chance. Players can make choices about betting and bluffing, but the outcome of each hand depends mainly on the cards.
Is 3 Patti Legal in India?
Offline Play
In India, gambling is mainly a state subject, so each state makes its own rules. The central Public Gambling Act of 1867 bans running a common gaming house, and many states have their own gambling laws based on it. Casinos are allowed only in a few places, such as Goa, Daman and Sikkim. Playing cards for money in public, or running a gambling den, can lead to police action, and arrests are often reported around festivals. See our news report on festival gambling in Ludhiana. Playing just for fun, with no money at stake, is not gambling.
Online Play
Online play changed in 2026. Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act in August 2025, and it came into force on 1 May 2026 along with new rules. The law bans offering any online money game, whether based on chance, skill or both. It also bans advertising such games and stops banks and payment companies from processing payments for them.
This means apps or websites that let you play 3 Patti for real money are not allowed to operate in India. Free online versions with no money or prizes, and recognised esports, can still be offered. If an app asks you to deposit money to play, stay away. Money sent to illegal platforms may be lost, with little chance of getting it back.
This guide is general information, not legal advice.
Playing Responsibly
If you play 3 Patti with family or friends, keep it light:
- Play for points or chips instead of money.
- Agree on rules and a time limit before starting.
- Never chase losses by playing longer or betting more.
- Do not play when stressed, upset or after drinking.
- Keep games away from children and teenagers.
Warning Signs
Gambling can become a problem for some people. Warning signs include spending more than you can afford, borrowing to play, hiding it from family, and feeling restless or low when you cannot play. If this sounds familiar, talk to someone you trust or a doctor. India’s free mental health helpline, Tele MANAS, can be reached by dialling 14416. Read more in our post on mental health awareness in India.
A common house rule treats 2, 3 and 5 of the same suit as a pure sequence, which makes pure sequences as common as trails.
What We Changed From the Old Post
We removed all encouragement to bet in online casinos and the claim that the game is a source of income. We corrected the other names of the game and fixed the odds table, which had wrong labels. We added clear rules, the 2025 online gaming law, the legal position for offline play and advice on responsible play.
