About National Women’s Day
In the country of India, National Women’s Day is observed every year on the 13th of February. The practice first began from the year 2014, on the 13th of February, which happened to be the 135th birth anniversary of Late Sarojini Naidu, popularly known as the ‘’Nightingale of India,’’ who was also the first-ever woman governor of the country. Sarojini Naidu was born on 13th February 1879 and passed away on the 2nd of March 1949.
Throughout her life, her works and contributions towards uplifting, empowering, and striving for the welfare of women have made a significant mark in the society, and hence, her date of birth was chosen to be celebrated as India’s national women’s day.
Sarojini Naidu was always objective of the development of women in the country and hence, her date of birth was first suggested by the members of the Bharatiya Mahila Sangh as well as the Akhil Bharatiya Mahila Sammelan, to be treated and celebrated as the nation’s women’s day.
Some of the notable facts of Sarojini Naidu’s life are that she was a renowned poet, activist, as well as a child prodigy, who served as the first woman governor in India for the united province states of Oudh and Agra between 1947 till 1949.
In 1905, she had also joined the Indian National Movement, right after the partition of Bengal. She also holds the record of being the first Indian woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress, in the year 1925.
She had also been awarded the medal Naidu Kaiser-i-Hind by the British government in the year 1928, for her phenomenal work during the time of the plague epidemic in the country.

Many get confused between National and International Women’s Day, and hence, must remember that the latter is celebrated universally on the 8th of March every year, while India’s National Women’s Day came into being only since 2014 on the 13th of February.
