About World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day is celebrated on the 20th of June every year. It is a day of observance that began as an initiative by the United Nations, with the aim of commemorating the courage of all the refugees, including women, children, and men who had to flee their own countries, their homeland under conditions involving violence, conflict, or natural calamities.

This day is significant in many ways, one of which is the fact that all such refugees are honored for their endless determination and the will to live and start over, despite losing most or all of their life and belonging in their homeland.

The day is an international observance and not a public holiday. It is a day that fundamentally recognizes as well as honors the commitments as well as contributions of all the refugees in their groups.

Prominent organizations, for example, Amnesty International, as well as the International Rescue Committee, regularly get involved in different exercises for the day to salute the spirits of the refugees from all across the globe.

The UN Refugee Agency’s (UNCHR) logo is regularly connected with the day. The colors utilized for the same are either white on a blue-colored board or blue on a white-colored board.

The logo highlights olive branches that mainly denote peace, encompassing or securing two hands confronting each other, and right in the center, a figure of a man ensured by these hands.

The logo is at times highlighted with the words “UNHCR”, trailed by “The UN Refugee Agency” in a relatively smaller text to showcase the logo.

Leaving behind one’s home or one’s family in cases of violence, conflict, or emergency is not an easy task and it is far too difficult to have the will to survive after all that a refugee has to go through and hence, this day acknowledges the inexplicable courage of such human beings who dared to dare and start over again, despite losing so much in their lives.
