About Srirangam

Located in the city of Tiruchirapalli in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Srirangam is a popular island known for its religious significance among the Hindus.

It happens to be one of the most popular Hindu pilgrim places and houses a large number of devotees of Lord Vishnu, a popular Hindu deity who is also termed as “the preserver” in Hindu mythology. These followers are also commonly addressed as Srivaishnavites.

Geographically, the sacred island is surrounded by holy River Kaveri, also known as the Cauvery River in modern terminologies and River Coleroon.

When it comes to holy shrines, Srirangam is most famous for the Vishnu temple known as Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, which happens to be the largest temple complex in the entire country of India. The idol of Lord Vishnu here is said to be self-manifested and the size of the temple is extremely huge, covering an area of around 156 acres.

Consisting of 21 towers, the gopuram of Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is the tallest one in Asia having a height of 236 feet. When one gets inside the temple complex, he can find a separate shrine for the worship of Goddess Andal, a museum, and a library.
