About Mithuna Sankranti

Mithuna Sankranti is a popular Hindu religious festival in India that is celebrated for four long days and the second day of this celebration marks the beginning of monsoon in the country.

Traditionally, Mithuna Sankranti marks the commencement of the third solar month in the traditional Hindu calendar.

There are around 12 Sankrantis in the Hindu calendar and all of these are considered to be auspicious and appropriate for all kinds of ‘’Daan-Punya’’ activities.

This is precisely why donating clothes, giving gifts to the ones in need is considered to be extremely auspicious during Mithuna Sankranti.

This year in 2017, Mithuna Sankranti falls on the 15th of June and the four-day-long festival will go on till the 18th of June. In south India, Mithuna Sankranti is known as Aani or Asharh, while in Kerala, it is known as Mithunam Onth.

In the state of Odisha, it is known as Raja Parba and celebrated with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm by performing traditional puja, just like it is, in other states of India.

Since the festival also marks the beginning of rains, men and women during the celebrations dance barefoot with the joy of first rains after a scorching hot summer.

The girls who are unmarried dress up beautifully during the celebration, decking themselves with wonderful ornaments as well.

On the other hand, all married women during this day take a well-deserved break from the household chores and come forward to celebrate the beginning of rains.

The sun god is also worshipped during this festival and people seek happiness, peace, and prosperity from him. The devotees also worship the lord and pray for the best harvest season with the welcoming of rains so that their household runs smoothly without any troubles.
