About Kalimpong

Located in the eastern state of West Bengal in India, Kalimpong is a popular hill station that is all set to become the district headquarter of the upcoming district of Kalimpong in West Bengal.

It stands at an elevation of around 1427 meters above the sea level, and the main languages spoken here are Bengali, Nepali, Lepcha, and Bhutia. English too is widely spoken here. According to the 2011 census of India, the total population of this area is around 49,403 people.

Geographically, Kalimpong is situated on a ridge that overlooks the famous Teesta River. The place formerly used to serve as a gateway for trade between India as well as Tibet, until China intervened and annexed Tibet during the Sino-Indian War.

As of today, Kalimpong happens to be a perfect and popular tourist attraction site, thanks to its surroundings of the evergreen and beautiful Himalayan Ranges, its soothing climate, as well as its close proximity with a list of other famous tourist destinations.

Kalimpong is also quite famous for its wide range of educational institutions, which are all enveloped by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains. Alongside, a large part of Kalimpong’s economy comprises of its orchids and nurseries that bring notable Himalayan flowers to the market, boosting the place’s economy.

Other than these aspects, the place is also a very prominent Buddhism religious center. In fact, it houses the very popular Buddhist monastery, called the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang that consists of a plethora of ancient and traditional Buddhist scriptures.
