About Matheran
Located in the Raigad district in the state of Maharashtra in India, Matheran is a municipal council as well as a significant hill station that garners a lot of tourist attention.
Geographically, Matheran is known as the smallest hill station in the country of India. With an elevation of around 800 meters above the sea level, Matheran is situated on the Western Ghats and is at a distance of only 90 KM away from the city of Mumbai, that is the capital of the Maharashtra state.
The official language of Matheran is Marathi, although people do speak Hindi and English as well in the region. According to the 2001 census of India, Matheran has a small population of over 5,139 people and the place was discovered in the year 1850 by the then district collector of the district of Thane in Maharashtra. The British during their rule in India, treated Matheran as a proper summer getaway to beat the heat.
As of today, Matheran happens to be a health sanatorium and is treated as an eco-sensitive region. In the interiors of this hill station, no private vehicles are allowed, and one can only use horses and hand-pulled rickshaws for conveyance. Other than that, ambulances allowed by the municipality run in the area.
Matheran is decked with a list of herbs and medicinal plants and also houses a massive population of monkeys. The drinking water in this area comes from the nearby Charlotte Lake.
