International day of the world’s indigenous peoples (9th of August)

Every year on the 9th of August, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed. It was declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations, and first pronounced in the year 1994 in the month of December.

The day aims at protecting the rights of all the indigenous people around the world and also recognizing the contributions made by many indigenous people to society, for instance, in the sector of environmental protection.

The United Nations aims at making people from various countries across the globe to be aware of the indigenous people, who are also known as the aboriginal peoples or first peoples and observe this day as a means to strive for the protection of their rights.

The activities taking place during this day include things like educational forums as well as classroom discussions to gain more knowledge about the indigenous peoples and appreciate their contribution and existence in society.

The reason 9th of August was chosen as the date of observance for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is the fact that in the year 1982, on the same date, the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group of Indigenous Populations of the Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

The artwork was chosen as the visual identifier of the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues was made by a Chakma boy, hailing from the country of Bangladesh. His name’s Rebang Dewan.

It has likewise been seen on various materials to regularly promote the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. It highlights two ears of green leaves that together face each other, supporting a globe looking like our planet earth.
