About International Day of Non-Violence
The world observes International Day of Non-Violence every year on the 2nd of October, which also coincides with Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti in India.
The United Nations General Assembly on the 15th of June in the year 2007 voted to observe the 2nd of October every year as International Day of Non-Violence, and it asks all the member states of the United Nations to commemorate the 2nd of October every year in an appropriate manner, wherein the message and concept of non-violence should be disseminated all across the globe through public awareness as well as educational means.
The primary reason for choosing the 2nd of October as International Day of Non-Violence is the fact that on this day, Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as the father of the nation of India was born.
Gandhi was not just an epitome in the freedom struggle of India but was also the one who was the pioneer of the Indian Independence Movement, and who fundamentally laid in the minds of the masses the concept and strategies, philosophies, revolving around non-violence.
In this context, the United Nations’ resolution for the International Day of Non-Violence vows for ‘’the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.’’
Gandhi believed non-violence to be the greatest force available at the disposal of mankind, which is mightier than the mightiest weapon available on the planet and hence, one must use it genuinely to attain things that might otherwise seem impossible to achieve.
On this day, for his remembrance, his favorite song ‘’Raghupati Raghav Rajaram’’ is played frequently in some of the most prominent places all around.
Some of the most popular movements led by Gandhi during his fight for freedom of India include the Salt Satyagraha, the civil disobedience movement, the Dandi March, as well as the non-cooperation movement.
