About Engineers Day of India

Every year on the 15th of September, India observes its Engineers Day. It is a day of important significance for the Engineering Community of India.

The day is observed insignificance of the birth anniversary of one of the most popular and remarkable engineers from India—Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, commonly known as Sir MV. Even today he is held in extremely high regard when it comes to the arena of pre-eminent engineers in the country. He also received the Bharat Ratna for his immense contribution in this field.

The Engineers Day of India is observed to pay a tribute to him, and also celebrate the field of engineering that has brought so many revolutions in India as well as overseas to date and the years to come.

Sir MV was born on the 15th of September in the year 1861, and other than being a renowned engineer, he was also a scholar, a statesman, and also the Diwan of Mysore from the year 1912 till 1918 (6 years).

During the reign of the British in India, he was honored with the Knight Commander title of the British Indian Empire by King George V, on account of his massive contribution to the overall public good.

Some of the projects he handled during his tenure as a chief engineer for which he is still remembered today, include, the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, located in the Mandya district in the south Indian state of Karnataka, as well as flood protection system in the city of Hyderabad, for which too he served as the chief engineer. His mark in the field of civil engineering has been an inspiration for many aspiring engineers. He did his engineering from the College of Engineering in Pune.

He passed away on the 12th of April in the year 1962, at the old age of 100. In his memory, India celebrates Engineering Day every year, and many colleges have their names coined after him, especially in Karnataka, such as—Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, etc.
