About World Ocean Day

Every year on the 8^th of June, World Ocean Day is celebrated. The main objective of the day is to raise awareness among the masses regarding the challenges faced by the international communities in the conservation of the oceans in our planets, and how we can contribute to its betterment so that the oceans are not harmed, since they occupy over 70% of our planet and are an integral part of our environment. It was first celebrated in the year 2009 on the 8^th of June and since then, observed every year on the same date.

Our lungs in this planet, giving the greater part of the oxygen we inhale, the oceans we have on Earth are likewise a noteworthy wellspring of sustenance and pharmaceuticals and a basic piece of the biosphere. They contribute incessantly to our daily lives in more ways than we can think of and are also active ingredients in the medicines we take in different forms.

The idea of a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in the year 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as an approach to commemorate our planet’s shared oceans and our own association with these oceans, and to bring several issues to light about the pivotal part the oceans play in our lives and the critical ways individuals can help ensure its protection.

The UN General Assembly perceived the vital commitment of maintainable advancement and administration of the assets and employments of the seas and oceans to the accomplishment of universal improvement objectives, incorporating those contained in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, and decided to observe June 8 as World Oceans Day.

This year in 2017, the theme of the Ocean Conference that would start with the celebration of World Environment Day is, ‘’Our oceans, our future: Partnering for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14.’’
