About Sindhu Darshan Festival

Sindhu Darshan Festival is a popular religious festival in India, which is held on the eve of Guru Poornima, which is a full moon night, every year in the month of June. This year in 2017, the festival date has fallen on the 23rd of June.

This is one of those festivals in the country, which attracts not just the domestic crowds but foreign crowds as well. It is celebrated in full swing in Leh, in the district if Ladakh in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir in India.

The festival first took place in the year 1997 in the month of October, and ever since then it has been celebrated every year in the country.

The name Sindhu here refers to the Sindhu River, which is also known by the name of Indus. The primary object of the Sindhu Darshan Festival is to acknowledge the fact that the Indus River stands as the main base of the peace, harmony, and unity of India since it is on this river that entire India stands, and thus, this water body unites us all.

The festival secondarily also honors all the soldiers of our country who risk their lives to ensure that the communal harmony and unity in India prevails against all odds.

People from all across the country, as well as overseas, come forward to celebrate the Sindhu Darshan Festival.

They bring water from rivers of their own state in earthen pots and then together immerse these pots in the Indus River, which denotes the uniformity of us all in the country and how the river Indus unites us, as, during the festival, water from all different rivers together mingle to become one as the river water pots are immersed in the Indus river.

In order to promote national integrity, the community that looks after the right celebrations of the Sindhu Darshan Festival, includes members who are Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, as well as Buddhist too, in order to demonstrate the cultural diversity as well as the unity of India.
