About Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga

The Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 jyotirlingas– holy abodes of Lord Shiva located in the holy pilgrimage place of Kedarnath, which itself resides in the Himalayan Ranges on the Mandakini River, in the state of northern state of Uttarakhand in India.

Among all the 12 jyotirlingas spread all across the country, it is the Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga in the Kedarnath Temple that is located at the maximum height, and due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is not open to tourists for darshan all time, and has a limited period of viewing from the month of April till November.

Lord Shiva here is worshipped as the Lord of the Kedar Khand, and unlike its usual shape in all other places, the Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga is actually in a pyramidical shape.

According to historians, the town was named Kedarnath after King Kedar, who was the ruler during the Satya Yuga. It is also said that he had a daughter who was named Vrinda, and believed to be a partial incarnation of popular Hindu deity—Goddess Lakshmi.

It is believed that she would perform rigorous hours of meditation and pay her respect to Lord Shiva, and it was after her that the land here was named Vrindavan.

The town of Kedarnath has its mentions in the great Indian epic Mahabharata, and since then it has attained a lot of attention among Hindu devotees.

It is said that the Pandavas were the ones to build this temple first and later on popular Indian theologian and philosopher Adi Shankara amended it.

The temple is also a part of the holy Hindu ChotaChaarDhaam Pilgrimage of the northern Himalayas.

Although the 2013 Flash Floods of Uttarakhand damaged the place exponentially, the temple didn’t suffer any such big damage, except for a few cracks on the outside.

A large rock lie debris had protected the temple from getting damaged, even though the places around it, including markets, were badly damaged, and the floods came to be known as one of the worst natural calamities in the country in recent times, claiming lives of many people and also causing massive damage to property.
