About Kargil Vijay Diwas

India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas on the 26th of July every year. The day was named after the success of Operation Vijay—also known as the Kargil War.

It was on this day in the year 1999 that Kargil War between India and Pakistan had finally ended and resulted in India taking command over all the high outposts, which had been previously taken over by Pakistani intruders.

The Kargil war had lasted for around 60 days and by the end of it, there were huge losses of life on both sides of India and Pakistan, however, it was India that emerged as victors, regaining control over lost territories.

Hence, on the 26th of July, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated to not just mark India’s victory, but also remember the contributions and sacrifices of all the soldiers who had been a part of this war.

The day is celebrated at a grand scale mainly in the Kargil- Dras sector, as well as New Delhi, which is the nation’s capital city. The Prime Minister on this day pays homage to all the soldiers who lost their lives guarding the country, at Amar Jawan Jyoti situated at the India Gate.

Various programs are organized in the capital city as well as other parts of India to pay tribute to the soldiers, and at the same time salute the endless contributions made by the Indian Armed Forces in day to day life.

It might come as a shocker to you but around 527 Indian soldiers had lost their lives during the Kargil War, and we must always remember this indefinable contribution from our army in making sure that we, the common people are safe and sound and live our life untouched by the terror that the rival countries often try to cloud us with.
