About International Youth Day

International Youth Day is celebrated every year on the 12th of August. Commonly known as simply IYD, this day is an awareness initiated by the United Nations.

The main aim of observing this day is to bring people’s attention to various legal and cultural issues that surround the youth of today. This day was first observed in the year 2000, and hence, this year in 2017, it would mark its 17th anniversary.

The day is a platform for governments all across the world to bring much-needed attention of the public towards significant issues concerning the youth of today.

On this day, many workshops, cultural events, concerts, seminars are held all over the world and meetings are conducted by prominent local as well as national government officials alongside popular youth organizations in the whole world.

The designation of International Youth Day happened in the year 1999 alongside the United Nations’ adoption of Resolution 54/120.

Each year, there’s a different theme adopted to celebrate the International Youth Day, which is also known as the IYD’s slogan every different year. For instance, in the year 2014, the theme was ‘’Youth and Mental Health.’’

In the year 2015, the theme was ‘’Youth and Civic Engagement.’’ Similarly, the theme last year, which is in 2016 was, ‘’The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production.’’

And for this year, 2017, the theme of the IYD is ‘’Youth Building Peace,’’ wherein the day shall recognize the contributions made by the young people of various countries when it comes to preventing conflict, fight for social justice, sustainable peace, as well as supporting inclusion.

One of the most popular events associated with the International Youth Day is the International Youth Conference, wherein many prominent speakers from different arenas of work come to speak about issues relating to the youth as well as the immense contribution made by the youth, which is followed by the youth awards ceremony.

This one took place in the year 2013, and was hosted by three prominent bodies: the US consulate general, YOUTHINK, and the Youth Exnora, in the Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in India.
