Gujarat Vidyapith’s governing council announced on Tuesday, in a departure from tradition, to invite state Governor Acharya Devvrat as its next chancellor and thus break with its longstanding tradition of choosing an eminent Gandhian for this position. For the first time ever, non-Gandhian will lead this institution.

Pratinidhi Mandal of the university released a press release detailing that their Governing Council had unanimously decided on Tuesday to invite State Governor Acharya Devvrat as 12th chancellor of Vidyapith Vidyapith”. They further reported that a delegation will visit him to make this official.

Ela Bhatt, 89, announced her resignation as Chancellor of a deemed university due to health reasons in recent months, asking its trustees for assistance in finding her a successor. Bhatt had taken on her role after former Chancellor Narayan Desai’s departure in March 2015.

Sources reported that the governing council of a university held a long meeting and discussed various options, lasting several hours, before voting majority-wise to appoint Acharya Devvrat, with his links to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Many were shocked at this outcome, especially after controversy surrounding Rajendra Khimani’s selection as vice-chancellor who is facing investigation for financial irregularities.

In October, nine trustees of a university had resigned in protest over state Governor Acharya Devvrat’s appointment of Acharya Devvrat as its Chancellor under political pressure and against Gandhian values and ideals enshrined within it. Prominent trustees such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr Rajendra Prasad had opposed this non-Gandhian candidate’s appointment as well.

After accepting Ela Bhatt’s (89) resignation as founder and self-employed women’s association founder Ela Bhatt (89), its decision-making body resolved on October 4 to invite Governor Acharya Devvrat as the 12th chancellor for five years; however, eight out of nine trust members objected.

On Tuesday, the governing body of Gujarat Vidyapeeth decided not to accept the resignations of nine trustees who resigned to protest Governor Acharya Devvrat’s appointment as Chancellor under “political pressure”. Additionally, four new trustees – Harshad A Patel, Dilip P Thaker, Gafurbhai Mohammadbhai Bilakhiya and Rajshree Birla were appointed instead.

Rajendra Khimani was appointed Vice-Chancellor by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on April 27. Subsequent to receiving a UGC report which revealed several procedural and financial lapses during his appointment process; specifically violations to several UGC rules and policies by his university. Khimani submitted his resignation after reading through it in its entirety.

On September 21, the high court directed that varsity to take “appropriate action within eight weeks, as per UGC directive. Professor Bharat Joshi from its Department of Education has been instructed to act as in-charge vice chancellor until an appointed replacement can be found.
