About Gangtok

Situated on the Eastern Himalayan Range, Gangtok is one of India’s most prominent hill stations and is also the capital of the state of Sikkim.

Standing at an elevation of around 1,600 meters, Gangtok initially was treated only as a Buddhist pilgrimage site, but today, it is one of the most popular tourist spots in the country.

Many languages are spoken in this region, including Nepali, Lepcha, Bhutia, Limbu, Newari, Gurung, Rai, Sherpa, Tamang, Sunwar, Hindi, as well as Tibetan.

According to the 2011 census of India, the total population of Gangtok is a little over 98,658 people. The majority believe that the literary meaning of Gangtok is “hilltop.”

Currently, the significance of Gangtok in tourism is multidimensional as it serves as not just a hill station but also as a Tibetan Buddhist Culture Center, a hub for religious educational institutions and also as a center for Tibetology.

The temperature remains decent throughout the year, as summers are mild and winters are quite pleasant in the region. Since it stands at a high elevation, one can experience extreme fogs during the monsoons as well as the winter season. Gangtok attains the majority of Sikkim’s tourism and a large part of the state is indirectly as well as directly employed in the tourism sector.

Over the years even ecotourism has garnered a lot of popularity here, with the growing demand and popularity of adventure sports like trekking, rock-climbing, river-rafting, mountaineering, etc.
